Vienna & Zell am See-June 2023

WE ARE NOW FULLY BOOKED....AGAIN!

BUT WE HAVE A WAITLIST AND HOPE TO HAVE SOME ROOMS AGAIN SOON.

Vienna

One of the prettiest cities in Europe and capital of a former huge and wealthy Empire, Vienna has it all. Our holiday starts here with three nights in the brand new Mooons city-centre hotel, located ideally to visit some of the multitude of sites for which Vienna is famous. If you simply want a stroll, the Belvedere Palace and its gardens are just moments away. The city centre is 30 minutes’ walk or just three metro stops. Our visit includes a tour of the magnificent Belvedere Palace, and you have the opportunity to tour many other palaces, cathedrals, museums and monuments at your leisure.

We travel by train direct from Vienna to Zell am See, a gorgeous four-hour journey across Austria. (Please note that not all seats face forwards, so you must be prepared to seat facing backwards. For an extra £12 we can guarantee your seat facing forward)

Three times weekly the lake-side is transformed into a magnificent theatre of sound and light with superb water fountain shows. Surrounding the town are the high Austrian Alps, usually capped with snow and stretching up to and above 3000 metres. Cable-cars whisk you up to the top, where panoramic restaurants wait to serve you an array of refreshments and tasty menus. Well marked walks through the mountains cater for most abilities, from the leisure stroller to the avid mountaineer….and from 2020, new cable-cars await!

Sheltering in a deep valley, on the edge of the Zeller Lake, Zell am See is the ideal destination for almost every holidaymaker. Spacious beaches and lake-side terraces give access to swimming and watersports on the lake. The town’s indoor pool and sauna also offer great relaxation possibilities. Copious cafes, bars and restaurants invite you to join them for a coffee, a beer or a gorgeous ice-cream or apfel-strudel and plentiful shops vie for your business.

Romantik Hotel Metzgerwirt

This will be the eighth year that we have featured the beautiful “Romantikhotel, Zell am See”. It is a quirky, 4* hotel built and extended over four generations in typical Tyrolean style. A hearty breakfast each morning is followed by a superb dinner in the evening, with a choice of main courses and an extensive salad buffet. The hotel boasts a small indoor-outdoor pool, with plenty of sun-loungers. An extensive spa and solarium offer relaxation and a friendly, comfortable bar invites you for congenial fun. The Romantik Hotel offers bicycle hire for those energetic enough to want to go anywhere on them and you can arrange a wonderful massage at the end of your busy day. Is it any wonder we are returning for the sixth time!

Hotel Rooms - Romantikhotel

The hotel has been extended and modernised over generations, with the result that there are many different types of rooms. All (except two smaller single rooms) are very generously proportioned and most have balconies, but not all. We allocate rooms with balconies in strict order of receiving your booking. Some rooms are furnished in traditional style. Others in very modern style. Let us know which you would like. They're all quite nice!

NOTE: It is very important you advise us of any walking difficulties or other health conditions, such as heart problems, diabetes, etc. Not all rooms are serviced by lifts and you may need to negotiate stairs. Few rooms have fridges or mini-bars, but we can usually arrange one, if its necessary for medication, etc. So, it is important we know about any ailments or conditions, which might impinge on your enjoyment., We want to allocate you a suitable room. If you have not advised us of such conditions, we are unlikely to be able to move you to another, more suitable room, as the hotel is ALWAYS fully booked.

PROPOSED EXCURSIONS

Please note these are subject to change and other excursions may be added. We will finalise the excursions by mid-December 2022.

  “Zell-Kaprun Cards ”- worth approx. €500 p.p.

The card entitles you to travel on numerous lifts and cable cars, on the Schmittenhöhe ship for a cruise around the lake, for unlimited ferry crossings and for entrance to a multitude of places.

Schmittenhöhe Cable Car (and Panorama Walk).

 (Activity Level 2 -Level 3)

Today, we travel by bus from Zell to the Schmittenhöhe cable-car station, from where we ride to the top. Simply stop for a coffee to admire the view before returning or you may wish to join Alan on a walk across the mountain and down to the valley on another cable-car. Learn all about the local flora and fauna. The walk is not particularly strenuous and is mostly downhill. It is over a distance, though, of approximately 2 kms and sturdy shoes are advisable.

Gipfelwelt 3000 FREE (Activity Level 2) (NEW TOUR)

This tour will be different from previous years, as we’ll be using a new route with an extra scenic cable-car ride. Early local bus to Kaprun, from where we travel on the cable-car system, high up into the mountains. The first two cable cars bring us to the foot of the snow-line, above which snow and ice remain for the entire summer (usually). We transfer then to the "Gipfel 3000", which whisks us up to 3029 metres, just over 10,000 ft. You have the opportunity here to enjoy stunning views over the glaciers below and to experience the facilities offered at "Gipfelwelt 3000", such as the Cinema 3000, the Ice Arena and the National Park Gallery.  Return on the new cable-car to Maiskogel and on to Kaprun in the valley below. This tour is accessible to almost everyone although we suggest that those with any medical condition avoid the National Park Gallery, due to the steep incline at such altitude.

Coach Tour of Grossglockner. (Extra cost £35 per person) (Activity Level 2-3)

The world’s most famous alpine road: the highest mountain Grossglockner (3,798m) and the largest glacier in Austria, the Pasterze. On the ascent from 1,500m to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe you pass through all of the vegetation zones from cornfields to the eternal ice. Marvel at the breathtaking scenery and the engineering spectacle, which created the road which twists in sweeping curves up through the mountain passes. If you are interested in this tour, can you please let us know at time of booking, as we need to book the space. No minimum numbers required. Also note, that unless the weather is really bad, the tour will take place, even if it’s raining or misty.

 (Activity Level 2)

An excursion for everyone. Walk as little or as much as you wish. We take the bus from Zell to the Kettle Waterfalls. From here, we travel by special bus, through tunnels and around hairpin bends, until we reach the High Dams at Mooserboden. You now have the opportunity to explore the dams or have a snack at one of the restaurants, before returning to the valley below and your awaiting bus back to Zell am See. (Activity Level 2)

High Dams Hike – (Activity Level 5)

For those keen to stretch their legs, we offer a 2-hour hike down to the next reservoir. Sturdy footwear is imperative. Proper walking shoes or walking boots, with good thick socks. This is a spectacular walk and involves clambering up a waterfall, through a cave and along some pretty steep and uneven paths. One for the record books, though! (Activity Level 5)

Maiskogel Hike (Activity Level 5)

From the Alpine, we offer a breath-taking excursion, only for the quite adventurous and fit. We start at the Alpine Centre at 2450 metres and most of the walk is over uneven trails, sometimes quite narrow and steep....but nearly all downhill. There are streams to cross and some snow to traverse. We will walk along the arret, separating two valleys, offering unforgettable views. We have time to stop and enjoy the flora and maybe the fauna, as we make our way down to the Glocknerblick chalet, where we stop for a well-deserved beer or soft drink. From here, we take the Maiskogel cable-car into the valley below at Kaprun, to catch the bus back to our hotel. The total walking time is around four hours and you will descend approximately 850 metres (almost 3000 ft). There is some uphill walking, too, so be prepared. There is no rock-climbing and no specialist equipment or experience is required. Walking boots are absolutely essential and you will not be permitted to join the hike without them. A small rucksack for water, some food, a jumper and a rain-proof is also recommended. This walk is NOT for anyone who is not reasonably fit.

Our journey takes us along the Salzach Valley to Werfen, another place made famous in an epic film…..you’ll have to join us to find out which film! It’s about 50-60 minutes from here back to the hotel, in time for a quick swim or shower before dinner.

We will meet again mid-afternoon for the tram or taxi back to the station and train home.
