ZELL AM SEE, AUSTRIA

Flying from Dublin Airport

03 - 14 JULY 2026

11 Nights

This holiday is fine for almost everyone but is not ideal for those with mobility issues. The hotel could not be described as fully-accessible but, on recent visits, we have had customers who have managed with wheelchairs or walking aids. Some of the walks involve a degree of fitness but there are easier alternatives for those less able. If you are unsure, call Alan on 07808366930.

There will be a full-day tour to Innsbruck and the stunning abbey at Stams, which will involve quite a bit of walking. The amount of walking can be reduced for those with less mobility but all arewas may not be accessible. We will do what we can to accommodate everyone, within reason.

Zell am See

Sheltering in a deep valley, on the edge of the Zeller Lake, Zell am See is the ideal destination for almost every holidaymaker. Spacious beaches and lake-side terraces give access to swimming and watersports on the lake. The town’s indoor pool and sauna also offer great relaxation possibilities. Copious cafes, bars and restaurants invite you to join them for a coffee, a beer or a gorgeous ice-cream or apfel-strudel and plentiful shops vie for your business.

Romantik Hotel Metzgerwirt

This will actually be the eleventh year that we have featured the beautiful “Romantikhotel, Zell am See”. It is a quirky, 4* hotel built and extended over four generations in typical Tyrolean style. Recent years have seen a lot of renovations and refurbishments and this is now a "world-class" hotel. A hearty breakfast each morning is followed by a superb dinner in the evening, with a choice of main courses and an extensive salad buffet. The hotel boasts a small indoor-outdoor pool, with plenty of sun-loungers. An extensive spa and solarium offer relaxation and a friendly, comfortable bar invites you for congenial fun. The Romantik Hotel can arrange a wonderful massage at the end of your busy day. Is it any wonder we are returning for the tenth time!

Hotel Rooms - Romantikhotel

The hotel has many different types of rooms. All (except two smaller single rooms) are very generously proportioned and most have balconies, but not all. We allocate rooms with balconies in strict order of receiving your booking. Some rooms are furnished in traditional style. Others in very modern style. Let us know which you would like. They're all quite nice!

The supplements below include the two nights in Munich, where all rooms are the same as each other.

We offer the following room-types:

2 x Standard single - £100   supplement

This is a smaller room than the twin/doubles and does not feature a balcony. They are located in the original part of the hotel and are very comfortable but smaller. We usually only sell these when the allocation of standard rooms have gone....but you can choose one, if you wish!

4 x Superior single - £250   supplement

These are spacious double/twin rooms for single occupancy and most have balconies, which are allocated by the hotel on a "first come, first served basis"

10 x Superior double/twin - No supplement

Most have balconies - book early to be sure of best chance! Rooms are allocated by the hotel ona "first come basis"

4 x Pinzgauerin Suites - £  250pp  supplement

These are much larger double rooms. Each brand new suite features a sitting area and your own private sauna and balcony. New in 2023 and 2024, these are just gorgeous! Just four, though!

"Run of House" rooms

We will always try to allocate rooms based on your requests, such as "low floor", "walk-in shower", "balcony", "near lift". Once a certain level of reservations is received by the hotel, such requests maay no longer be possible to provide. In such a case as this, the hotel reserves the right to allocate rooms as they see best fit. It is rare, hoever, that our customers do not get the type of room they requested.

NOTE: It is very important you advise us of any walking difficulties or other health conditions, such as heart problems, diabetes, etc. Not all rooms are serviced by lifts and you may need to negotiate stairs. A few rooms have fridges or mini-bars, but we can usually arrange one, if its necessary for medication, etc. So, it is important we know about any ailments or conditions, which might impinge on your enjoyment., We want to allocate you a suitable room. If you have not advised us of such conditions, we are unlikely to be able to move you to another, more suitable room, as the hotel is ALWAYS fully booked. Please note, requests for specific rooms or room types will be on a "first come, first served basis. For bookings made after 31 July 2025, rooms will be allocated on a "run of house basis" and special requests may not be available or possible.

We will have a list of excursions you can do on your own, with full details of how to do them, using your "Zell-Kaprun Summercard"

Please also note that some cable-cars may be closed for servicing, so we may need to adjust the tours accordingly.

  “Zell-Kaprun Summercards - worth approx. €600

The card entitles you to travel on numerous lifts and cable cars, on the Schmittenhöhe ship for a cruise around the lake, for unlimited ferry crossings and for entrance to a multitude of places. It also permits travel on a number of local buses and trains. Each year, there are more and more possibilities and opportunities.

Schmittenhöhe Cable Car (and Panorama Walk).

(Activity Level 2 -Level 3) Escorted

Today, we travel by bus from Zell to the Schmittenhöhe cable-car station, from where we ride to the top. Simply stop for a coffee to admire the view before returning or you may wish to join Alan on a walk across the mountain and down to the valley on another cable-car. Learn all about the local flora and fauna. The walk is not particularly strenuous and is mostly downhill. It is over a distance, though, of approximately 2 kms and sturdy shoes are advisable.

Gipfelwelt 3000 FREE (Activity Level 2) Escorted

Early local bus to Kaprun-Kitzsteinhorn, from where we travel on the cable-car system, high up into the mountains. The first two cable cars bring us to the foot of the snow-line, above which snow and ice remain for the entire summer (usually). We transfer then to the "Gipfel 3000", which whisks us up to 3029 metres, just over 10,000 ft. You have the opportunity here to enjoy stunning views over the glaciers below and to experience the facilities offered at "Gipfelwelt 3000", such as the Cinema 3000, the Ice Arena and the National Park Gallery. This tour is accessible to almost everyone although we suggest that those with any medical condition avoid the National Park Gallery, due to the steep incline at such altitude. This excursion departs the hotel at 9.00am or earlier.

Journey to Krimml Waterfalls.

(Activity Level 2-4) – "ON YOUR OWN TOUR"

We will depart the hotel at 9.30am for the narrow-gauge train to Krimml at 10.00am. arriving at 11.35am. You can spend as long or as short as you wish, allowing time for the energetic to walk to the top of the falls, some 650 metres uphill! Take your choice of return travel departing hourly at 1.20, 2.20, 3.20, 4.20pm. This is an all-day tour, arriving back around 5.30pm, in time for a swim before dinner!

Lake Zell cruise. "ON YOUR OWN TOUR"

A one-hour trip on the lake is included with your Zell-Kaprun-Card, as is limitless travel on the ferries. You can join the cruise at any time, at your leisure.

The High Dams (and Mountain Herbal Walk) FREE.

 (Activity Level 2)  Escorted

An excursion for everyone. Walk as little or as much as you wish. We take the bus from Zell to the Kettle Waterfalls. From here, we travel by special bus and an amazing funicular cable car, through tunnels and around hairpin bends, until we reach the High Dams at Mooserboden. You now have the opportunity to explore the dams or have a snack at one of the restaurants, before returning to the valley below and your awaiting bus back to Zell am See.

High Dams Hike – (Activity Level 5) Escorted

For those keen to stretch their legs, we offer a 2-hour hike down to the next reservoir. Sturdy footwear is imperative. Proper walking shoes or walking boots, with good thick socks. This is a spectacular walk and may involve clambering up a waterfall, through a cave and along some pretty steep and uneven paths. One for the record books, though! (Activity Level 5)

Maiskogel Hike (Activity Level 5)  Escorted

From the Alpine, we offer a breath-taking excursion, only for the quite adventurous and fit. We start at the Alpine Centre at 2450 metres and most of the walk is over uneven trails, sometimes quite narrow and steep....but nearly all downhill. There are streams to cross and some snow to traverse. We will walk along the arret, separating two valleys, offering unforgettable views. We have time to stop and enjoy the flora and maybe the fauna, as we make our way down to the Glocknerblick chalet, where we stop for a well-deserved beer or soft drink. From here, we take the Maiskogel cable-car into the valley below at Kaprun, to catch the bus back to our hotel. The total walking time is around four hours and you will descend approximately 850 metres (almost 3000 ft). There is some uphill walking, too, so be prepared. There is no rock-climbing and no specialist equipment or experience is required. Walking boots are absolutely essential and you will not be permitted to join the hike without them. A small rucksack for water, some food, a jumper and a rain-proof is also recommended. This walk is NOT for anyone who is not reasonably fit.
