OVERVIEW
Many people have visited both Prague and Munich but know very little of the splendour, the history or the culture of what lies in between. Perhaps you are one of them.
Let us transport you to another world, the lands of ancient Bohemia where you’ll find vibrant towns and cities, exciting tales of battles and wars that scarred and ultimately formed modern day Czechia (Czech Republic). Our tour doesn’t just end there, though. We’ll take you to our favourite of all the German states, Bavaria. You’ll visit the beautiful walled city of Nuremberg and the industrial city of Ingolstadt, famous for its auto industry (Think Audi!). If you’re a music lover, you’ll be blown away by the organ in Passau Cathedral. Boasting 18,000 pipes, it is the largest church organ in the world…and we’ll have a recital, hopefully.
You’ll also experience the European Capital of Culture in 2025, Chemnitz in Saxony, and learn why it was called Karl Marx Stadt and then renamed back to Chemnitz. Visit its wonderful Railway Museum, some of which is just like a graveyard for old locomotives and part of which is run as a proper museum. Join us on a visit to Colditz Castle…yes it is a real castle, with hundreds of years of history. It was always much more than an internment camp for officers.
Throughout this tour, you’ll stay in lovely superior quality, four and five star hotels, featuring spacious accommodation. You can even upgrade to a suite, if you wish and if we have any left. You’ll dine well on local produce, usually with a choice of menu and diet. Our long-time friend and coach driver, Helmut Krumrey, will accompany us for much of the journey, safely driving us to locations not so accessible by local transportation.
This is a tour we have wanted to offer for several years and have had trouble fitting it in. Now it’s here and we hope you’ll join us. Please note, however, the tour is not suitable for anyone with more than moderate walking difficulties. There are some walking tours over cobbled streets and, in two or three places, short but quite steep hills to climb

As well of plenty to see, you will have free time to relax and actually enjoy each destination.
The tour does involve walking in every destination, often over cobbled streets and also up a few short but steep hills. It will be suitable for most people but anyone with lack of mobility will struggle in some places. We can try to make alternative arrangements to suit such persons, but we cannot guarantee it.

This morning, shortly after breakfast we travel by train through the gorgeous Czech countryside to the hill-town of Karlovy Vary, famous for its hot springs and fin-de-siecle hotels. We have four nights here at the splendid Spa Hotel Imperial, where you’ll have time to relax and enjoy this beautiful spa town. It’s also where our friend and driver, Helmut, will meet us the next day.

We have the day to relax. It’s a free day! Enjoy a bit of shopping or let yourself be pampered with one of the spa treatments. Stretch out in the sauna or on the terrace, whatever takes your fancy.

Today we’ll have an interesting but not too energetic excursion, first to the historic city of Cheb, one of the oldest and most important cities of ancient Bohemia. Never heard of it? That’s a shame, as it is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Czechia. We’ll have time to wander and enjoy it. We’ll travel on, through the hills to Marianske Lazne, or in its German form, Marienbad. Full of beautiful spa parks, romanttic colonnades and charming pavilions, this city impresses even the most doubting visitor. The town is endowed with many healing mineral springs and revels in a unique atmosphere that attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to soak up this atmosphere. It is a place where history meets today. After some free time, we’ll return to our hotel.

Wednesday, 01st September 2027
We have a busy but exciting day ahead of us. First we’ll travel to Ingolstadt, famous for its automotive industry and its medieval architecture. We’ll spend the morning here, before travelling on to one of Germany’s most amazing cities, Nuremberg. There’ll be a short guided walking tour, before we go for dinner in a local restaurant. After dinner, back to the hotel in Regensburg.

This morning, we say farewell to our friend, Helmut, who will have driven us safely through some wonderful scenery, to exciting sights. Today’s a free day but, if you wish, we can take an optional excursion to the Walhalla Monument, a neo-Greco acropolis housing busts of famous poets and politicians, kings and emperors, with an impressive view over the Danube. If you wish, you could try out the amazing Kaiser Therme spa, not far from the hotel. We could even do both!

It’s another early start as we head for Munich Airport. We’ll need to leave the hotel around 06.50 by taxi to the station. The train departs at 07.20, arriving at 08.53. After check-in, you’ll have plenty of time for breakfast at one of Munich’s great selection of dining venues.

Tuesday, 24 August 2027
Our flight arrives early afternoon in Prague, from where we travel to our city-centre hotel by private minibuses. After checking in, we’ll have a short walking tour in the city.

Wednesday, 25 August 2027
We’ll not start too early today but, after breakfast, we’ll pay a visit to Prague Castle, one of the largest such fortifications in the world. We’ll travel there and back by local bus, but for the more adventurous, we can walk down from the castle to the city below.
Take a break for lunch. Then we’ll have a walking tour of Prague’s highlights. Coffee and cake at one of Prague’s famous and stunning cafes. Free time to relax. Dinner at a local restaurant or at the hotel.

Sunday. 29th August 2027
After an early breakfast, we’ll depart for the city of Chemnitz in Saxony, Germany. It has a fascinating history, both ancient and modern, and houses the German Railway Museum, a huge sprawling site which will leave a lasting impression on you.
From here, we’ travel on to Colditz Castle, where we’ll be shown by extremely interesting tour guides. Learn about the castle’s history and the part it played in the Second World War.
We plan to drive on to Leipzig, where we can spend some time in the old town before enjoying an evening meal. Late evening drive back to Karlovy Vary.
Monday, 30th August.
After checking out around 09.00, we’ll depart for Czechia’s second city, Plzen (Pilsen). We’ll have a short tour there and some time on your own, before we continue our journey to Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany.
We have four nights here at the historic Bischofshof Hotel, smack in the city centre. Dinner at the hotel.
After dinner, we’ll have a walking tour around the old town.
Tuesday, 31st August 2027
Today’s excursion is not too taxing! (Famous last words…)
We’ll take the two hour drive to Passau. We’re going to spend most of the day here and our visit will include a tour to the superb St Andrews Cathedral, which houses the world’s largest organ, featuring over 18,000 pipes. Here, if we’re on time, we’ll enjoy a short recital. There will be plenty of time to enjoy the city and its lovely shops, cafes and terraces, overlooking the confluence of the Danube and Inn. We’ll return to the hotel in time for dinner.
