Tipping / Gratuities

Tips for staff in restaurants are already included in the cost of your holiday. Whilst no tipping of household staff in the hotels is necessary, it is customary, possibly expected, to leave a small tip for the staff who clean your room. This is not included in the cost of the holiday and is totally up to you as to how much, if anything, you decide to leave. The going rate is, however, around €2 or €3 pp/pd.

If you are having a coffee, beer or a snack, it is usual to round up the cost to the nearest one or two Euro. Any tip is always appreciated but rarely sought.

Weather, Clothes, Money, etc.

It is likely to be cold but probably not freezing. We recommend, therefore that you bring a selection of clothing but you can certainly leave your tee-shirts at home. A weatherproof is always a good idea, although Berlin has a lot less rainfall than we are accustomed to in Ireland.

Berlin is in Germany, so the local currency is Euro. Credit and Debit cards are widely accepted.

Being an international city, most people speak good English, so you will not have any problems.

Pickpockets are not common in Berlin but we always advise you to leave all valuables in your hotel safe and only carry what you might need for one day at a time. Better safe than sorry!

Public Transport is fantastic in Berlin, with buses, trams, Underground and Regional trains. Fares are cheap and we recommend using the public transport, wherever possible. All of our excursions and tours will include such travel.

Excursions

Berlin Walking Tours – Included in fare

We will offer two three-hour tours but you can drop off at any stage. It involves quite a bit of walking but also includes travel by metro and/or bus. We will see all of the following places of interest and maybe some more; Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, KaDeWe Department Store, Berlin Zoo (definitely worth a visit), Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, Museum Island, Berlin Cathedral, Jewish Memorial, Friedrichstrasse, Checkpoint Charlie, Potsdamer Platz and, of course, some of the famous Berlin Wall.

Berlin – Charlottenburg Palace and Christmas Markets…..includes evening meal

Included in your fare

One of the largest and most impressive Palaces in Germany, this was once home to Kings and Queens, Kaisers and Kaiserinnen, Princes and Princesses. Our tour includes a self-guided tour of the palace at your own speed. All the rooms and exhibits are explained in detail, in English. You will also have time at its beautiful Christmas Market before walking a short distance for our evening meal.

Berlin Wall Walk and Museum (Extra cost - £ 15)

This is only for those fit enough to walk 5 – 7 miles, mostly on level paths but not entirely. An early morning walk with Alan Couser, starting at “Mauerpark” and walking to Brandenburg Gate, we will stop at the brand new Wall Visitor Centre and Wall Memorial, opened by Bundeskanzler Angela Merkel in November 2014 to commemorate 25 years since the Wall came down. We will, of course, stop for a coffee or a beer (included in cost). Transport to/from the hotel is also included.

Berlin - Reichstag Building – Included in the fare

Although this may not seem like the highlight of any tour of Berlin, believe me, it is. You cannot simply arrive here and get in. You must book in advance....months in advance. The Reichstag Building is the seat of the German Parliament, famously burnt down by the Nazis, although Adolf Hitler said he wasn’t there!!! It was again destroyed, this time seriously, by Allied bombing. Through the post-war years it was used as government offices but was in dreadful repair until Sir Norman Foster and a team of architects redesigned it, adding a spectacular new cupola made of glass. It was to become, once again, Germany’s Parliament.  A wealth of history and a plethora of great stories will keep you spellbound. The cost includes an administration fee and audio guide.

Berlin – Friedrichstadt Palace Theatre

(Tickets from £40 - £100)

Come and see a unique world-class show at Europe’s top theatre, featuring the biggest stage outside Las Vegas and the longest line-up in the world. A musical extravaganza, a revue, where language is no barrier, with phenomenal costumes, dramatic stage sets and great music. We will have more details shortly,

Hop On – Hop Off Sightseeing Bus - £25 (24 hrs)

Always one of the best ways to see a city, you can pick up the bus from just across the road from the hotel. See the sights at your own pace; choose from one of two routes.
