Hungarian Parliament

Following only the Capitol in Washington and the Romanian Parliament on Bucharest in size, the iconic Hungarian Parliament is a "must-see" for visitors. A one-hour guided tour shows you the chambers, the grand entrance hall and the Hungarian Crown Jewels, amongst other things. Inspired by the House of Parliamnet in London. this is quite simply - breathtaking. Our visit will include a visit to the scene of slaughter by the Nazis in 1944, when they realised the war was about to be lost!

Cost: £13 for Irish/EU Passport holders

£25 for UK or other passports

                (Includes booking fee)

Dohany Street Synagogue

This is one of the biggest synagogues in the world and it has an intriguing history. Budapest was a hub for many thousand Jews pre-war and they are commemorated within its walls and gardens. This is not a "wander through" tour and will last around 90 minutes to 2 hours in total.

Entrance feea are payable at the door and are around £20 per person

BUDAPEST

We have often compared Budapest with London, Paris and Vienna. It is a gorgeous, Habsburg city, which festered behind an iron curtain for 45 years, with many of the grand old buildings falling into serious disrepair.

After “the wall” came down in Berlin and the Iron Curtain fell off the rails. Many cities in Eastern Europe began to re-emerge but it took another decade before Budapest started to shine again.

Today you will find a city completely rejuvenated, yet with traces of the Second World War and the atrocities of the Stalinist regime. You can learn of the persecution of its Jewish and ethnic communities and at the same time marvel at stunning architecture.

One such building is the so-called Haggenmacher Palace, built between 1884 and 1886 in neo-Renaissance style on Andrássy Avenue. It was designed by Henrik Schmahl, who also designed the Paris Court in Budapest. After many years of unsuitable use followed by more years of quasi-dereliction, the building was almost completely restored to its former glory and has now opened as a beautiful hotel, right on the main boulevard of Budapest, Andrassy. This is where we will be staying – the “Hotel Oktagon Haggenmacher”. -

(….not to be confused with the eASY Oktagon)

This holiday sold out in 2023 and we had nothing but praise for our choice of hotel. We expect that not only will this holiday also be popular but that Ryanair will increase the flight costs. So, early booking is absolutely imperative. We will be putting together a number of optional tours and excursions, such as a visit to the Hungarian Parliament, the Museum of Horror, the Opera and/or concerts in St. Stephens Cathedral. Bring your swimsuit and enjoy a time at the amazing and beautiful Szechenyi Baths or the Gellert Hotel Baths. For details of all the excursions, see below.

Our one-hour cruise will return in time for the evening meal, or we'll schedule it for after dinner depending on availability.

House of Terror

Once used y the "Arrow Cross" Facist Regime, this building became synonymous with torture and terror. Almost directly next door to our hotel, it is perfect for a visit if you want to find out about what went on behind its doors. It's not everyone's "cup of tea" but it does hold a certain amount of intrigue.
